Cellular Pathology

Cellular Pathology is the section of Pathology concerned with the study of cells (Cytology) and the study of tissues (Histopathology). More information can be found by clicking the links to each area.

NOTE: Cytology does not carry out white cell counts on fluid samples. These are done in Microbiology (Pinderfields).

NOTE NEW TAT’s

Changes in Consultant Histopathologist staffing have led to an overall shortfall of PA’s. This has led to difficulties in clearing reporting workload and hence a reporting backlog has been a consistent feature in the recent past, resulting in a drop in reporting turnaround times Several strategies have already been adopted in an effort to cover the consultant shortfall and prevent the reporting backlog from growing on an ongoing basis and indeed to reduce it. This is on the risk register and both short and long terms plans are in place. A new allocation system has been implemented to improve priority pathways with subtyping of priority cases based on clinical and patient need to allow for the best patient outcomes.

If this is having any clinical impact on patient care please notify the department on 01924 512088 / 35088 and we will endeavour to provide a diagnosis in a timely manner.  We apologise for the inconvenience and are working on actions to improve our service.
