Blood Sciences

Welcome to the Blood Sciences home page, the department is made up of the following pathology disciplines and operates 24/7 at PGH and DDH:

  • Clinical Biochemistry

The Clinical Biochemistry department measures a wide range of        analytes including renal/liver/cardiac/tumour and bone function          tests.  These measurements help in detecting and diagnosing            disease and in monitoring treatment.

Haematology encompasses clinical management of blood                  disorders, laboratory measurement of cellular components of              blood, provision and proper use of transfusion products, and              laboratory identification and clinical management of                            disturbances in haemostasis.

The departments are staffed by a combination of highly trained biomedical scientists/associate practitioners and medical laboratory assistants that offer a comprehensive acute and non-acute service, many of which are carried out on state-of-the-art automated analysers.

Extensive computer facilities ensure efficient, error-free processing of results.

The Blood Sciences Department provides a comprehensive service to all users, our TATs are grouped into 3 categories where results will be ready for the clinician to view from receipt of the specimen within the laboratory for automated tests.

  • A/E / Urgent Requests - 1hour

  • Inpatient Requests - 2hours

  • Outpatient Areas / GP - 24hours

Tests that are referred have individual TATs that are set by the referral laboratory.  This a measured in the same way as tests that are performed in house.
